THE REALITY
Waste and resource recovery decisions are rarely straightforward.
Operational needs, infrastructure, regulation, environmental risk and commercial realities all need to be considered. For councils, there is the added challenge of determining where to lead, where to collaborate and where investment will create genuine value.
Projects can lose momentum when the pathway is unclear.
Waste systems can become costly or vulnerable when they're not regularly reviewed.
Innovative ideas can stall when environmental risks and approval requirements are not addressed early enough.
SI Consulting helps bring these considerations together so that decisions can be made with greater clarity and confidence.
Where we create value
Our work is most relevant where waste, infrastructure or environmental risk has a measurable effect on operations, project viability or long-term planning.

How it Works
A structured, straightforward approach.
1 — Understand
We begin by understanding the organisation, the operating context and the decision that needs to be made.
2 — Assess
We examine the relevant waste streams, systems, infrastructure, risks, regulations and opportunities.
3 — Plan
We provide clear findings, practical recommendations and a realistic pathway forward.
4 — Support
Where required, we remain involved through planning, approvals, project development or implementation.
A short, no obligation, practical conversation to understand how waste is currently managed, and where improvements may be possible.
Why SI Consulting
Experience across the whole system.
SI Consulting is led by environmental scientist Maarten de Beurs, with more than a decade of experience across waste, wastewater, bioenergy, environmental management and the circular economy.
His work has ranged from helping develop one of Victoria’s first commercial food-waste-to-energy facilities, from early concept through to design, to reviewing waste-management planning for major infrastructure projects and managing waste and resource recovery within local government.
This provides a practical understanding of what it takes to move from an idea or policy objective to something that can be approved, delivered and operated.
Maarten understands the technical detail, but also how it connects with regulation, environmental risk, commercial viability, infrastructure, contracts and day-to-day operations. This allows potential issues to be identified early and recommendations to be based on what is realistically achievable.
